Score: SB Navigators 1 – STMA 6
Summary
The High School boys team’s 4-game winning streak came to an abrupt stop last night against St. Thomas More Academy (STMA).
Their team, made up of 10 juniors and seniors, proved to be too much experience for our young team, which is lead by our 5 juniors and 0 seniors.
STMA proved consistent in their midfield play followed by creating multiple chances through spectacular through balls to their three attacking forwards, leading to countless 1 on 1 breakaways and multiple goals. Their confident and seasoned soccer players presented a new type of opponent that the Navigators have not experienced since the first game against the Hudsonville Hornets in Zeeland, MI.
In spite of the STMA offensive barrage, the Navigators mounted an impressive attack down the right side of the field, where Max Schavey and Paul Barret combined on great combination play leading to a cross from the right wing. This cross was met by a streaking Jaron Caldwell, who among several STMA defenders one-touch volleyed the cross out of the air finding the back of the net in one of Jaron’s best goals of the season.
While the Navigators did mount other attacks, the pressure and impressive STMA goalkeeping was able to snuff each one out.

Coach’s Notes
From Coach Caldwell
I’m proud of our boys for continuing to fight and push to the end. We simply came across a more mature team with impressive soccer experience and IQ. We were not able to stop the midfield, which led to the countless through balls for their offense. They also won the air game, showing us how time and time again the power of winning headers. STMA is a varsity caliber team and if we want to compete at that level, these are the games where we need to prove it. We have a lot to work on to be able to battle them again on October 9, but these are the opportunities where we can learn, adjust and rise to the occasion for the rematch.
Next Game
The Navigators look to bounce back against Saint Joseph’s JV2 on Tuesday, September 30.
