Building Developmentally
Middle School Age-Based Teams
In 2026 we divided our middle school program into two age-appropriate teams. This structure allows us to provide developmentally appropriate competition and coaching for each age group. Each year, we evaluate the interest as we set teams and consider local competition and scheduling needs.
5th/6th Grade Team
For younger middle schoolers (ages 10–11) learning fundamentals and building confidence in competitive play.
7th/8th Grade Team
For older middle schoolers (ages 12–14) ready for higher-level competition and preparing for high school soccer.
Why Age-Based Teams?
Separating by grade creates more balanced competition and allows our coaches to tailor training to each age group's developmental stage. Fifth graders aren't competing against eighth graders, and everyone gets playing time appropriate to their skill level and physical development. Both teams represent South Bend Navigators and both receive quality coaching and competitive schedules.
Both teams play. Both teams grow. Both teams are Navigators.
Building Our Program Together
Boys High School: Two Teams, One Community
Boys High School Soccer features two teams this fall: a Varsity Team and a JV Team. This structure allows us to serve more players while maintaining quality coaching and competitive play for everyone.
Varsity Team
For experienced players ready for competitive high school soccer.
JV Team
For players developing their skills and wanting to compete at the high school level.
How Team Placement Works
After registration closes, all Boys High School players participate in a pre-season skills evaluation. This evaluation helps coaches place each player on the team that best fits their current skill level and development goals. Both teams receive quality coaching and play competitive schedules.
How JV Team Games Work
The JV Team has their own game schedule. To ensure quality competition and provide learning opportunities, some games include select players from the Varsity Team joining the JV Team roster. This approach benefits everyone:
- JV Team players get to compete alongside more experienced teammates
- Varsity Team players gain leadership experience and additional playing time
- Everyone grows together as South Bend Navigators
Both teams wear the same uniforms and represent South Bend Navigators with pride.
Why We're Doing This
This two-team structure is our response to growing interest in our program. Our goal is simple: we want to continue building the South Bend Navigators homeschool community and ensure that every player who wants to play has the opportunity to develop, compete, and grow in their faith and their game. Whether you're gaining experience on the JV Team or competing at the highest level on the Varsity Team, you're part of one program focused on player development and Christian community.
Whether on the Varsity Team or JV Team, every player matters. We're all Navigators.
